Lindenhurst, NY –Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley (D – Lindenhurst), following a trend set by national officials, has created a YouTube Videolog (Vlog) and Weblog (Blog) for civic education, to generate real-time dialogue amongst Long Island residents, reduce paper use, and reduce administrative costs. The media campaign is the first of it’s kind among local elected officials and illustrates the democratic nature of 21st century media.
“You-Tube-YouVote-YouWin” is a technology and environmental civic education campaign that will allow my office to more effectively inform constituents, hold-down administrative costs, and protect the environment by reducing the amount of paper consumed for communication,” Horsley stated.
Horsley launched the “YouTube-YouVote-YouWin” Campaign by creating a YouTube Channel connected to a video-equipped Blogin order to solicit issue-videos and real-time comments from residents. Legislator Horsley will also participate in real-time dialogue by posting one issue on his Blog for community discussion and comment. Legislator Horsley also invites the public to submit issue videos to YouTube.YouVote@gmail.comfor publication on Legislator Horsley’s YouTube Channel. The winning issue will be decided by the amount of comments received, and posted on Legislator Horsley’s blog as part of a civic education campaign. The producer of the winning submission will be invited to the Suffolk County Legislature and awarded a proclamation for their role in 21st century civic education.
Horsley stated, “You submit videos, you vote by commenting, and you win by learning. This is a ground breaking contest to develop fresh perspectives on how to resolve static dilemma’s, such as affordable housing. By announcing this campaign I am going directly to the people.”
